RESIDENTS OF OBSOMASE, ER LACK ADEQUATE PUBLIC TOILET FACILITIES

The deteriorated toilet facility

Obosomase, a town located in the Akuapim North District has only three public toilet facilities serving residents in the town.

All of the three facilities were constructed decades ago at a time when the town’s population was not large. The town now has an estimated population of about 5,000 people.

Interestingly, in spite of Obosomase’s steady growing population, there has not been any corresponding increase in public toilet facilities.

Furthermore, majority of households do not have toilet facilities thereby making the existing facilities the only places of convenience for hundreds of residents.

The situation has become a source of discomfort for users, some of whom have to queue for long hours on a daily basis to have access to the toilets.

In moments of acute need, usually in the mornings, some residents who are unable to withstand the pressure, particularly women and children, are left with no option but to enter the bush to relieve themselves.

Observation
When Eddie's Dailies visited one of the toilets located on the outskirt of the town last Sunday evening, it found that the building had reached an advanced stage of deterioration considering the pressure on it.

The building was designed to take 12 persons at a go; six cubicles for males and another six for females. It had developed cracks with faded walls, broken doors and a roof which was almost ripping off and it emitted a strong stench

Due to the deplorable nature, two out of the six cubicles at the men’s section had been permanently closed.

As if that was not enough, a portion of land by the toilet had been turned into a refuse dump.

As at 6:40 p.m, scores of residents, including children, had queued to use the facility which had no lights and compromised on the safety of the facility.

In an interview with a resident who identified herself only as Oforiwaa, she said: “it always seems like a punishment to come here. For those of us who cannot use the bush, we have to live with this challenge daily.”

The Obosomasehene, Nana Okofo Ayeh Bekoe appealed to the government and corporate organizations to come to its aid with adequate toilet facilities to avoid the outbreak of open defecation and its related health implications in the area.

"All the structures have outlived their service. it is a very sad situation. it is the our major challenge. we appeal to the government and everyone to come to our aid," he stated.
